Doc 1890-1970 was our most astute solon, & was among the earliest to recognize the growing Asian progeny vote, & as a result hired many Asian progeny at Doc's various businesses.
Doc arrived here in 1913 as a castaway Merchant Marine [originally from North Carolina] & became our business baron. The political irony is that when the "Japs" bombed
Pearl Harbor, true to Doc's populist leanings, Doc said that Hawai'i martial law military authorities should round up Hawai'i "Japs" & throw them overboard in the Moloka'i Channel. Yet, no sooner had Doc bellowed such venom, Doc testifies on behalf of interned AJA [Japanese of American ancestry -- born in Hawai'i, not
Japan][Japanese aliens only were allowed to apply for U.S. citizenship after 1952] solons Sanji Abe, Thomas Sakakihara, & Frank Ishii for their release.
In Doc's heart, Doc was a decent man. Fortuitously, Doc built his cavernous 2 story steel-reinforced concrete Coca Cola bottling plant in the heart of Shinmachi along Hilo bay, the only town in the Hawaiian Islands with a Japanese name. No sooner was it completed, Shinmachi gets wiped off the face of the earth a la the mythical lost city of Atlantis by the 1946 tsunami, except for Doc's concrete building, which was the literal life-saver for hundreds of Shinmachi residents who took refuge in Doc's building as the tsunami drowned Shinmachi's people.
In sum, testimony from Doc's heart for our buddahead solons, & the fortune of fate that resulted in the survivors of Shinmachi finding refuge in Doc's concrete building. Doc's grandson Steven Hill Steiner born 1960 thru Doc's daughter [deceased] is a New Hampshire all time hero [anti-drug crusader] who is pondering a potential US Senatorial run in New Hampshire.
